Family Stories

The House is like our home close to the hospital.

May 20, 2011 Hisako Yamazaki

Our first daughter, Yuko, was born on March 1, 2011.
The baby was found to have a disease in the 8th month of pregnancy. I myself was very healthy but was told to be further examined in a hospital that I visited with a referral form when I was staying in my hometown, Kushiro, for delivery. And echocardiography detected a heart abnormality in my daughter. As I worked in the medical profession, I knew heart abnormalities vary widely in their severity so was optimistic about her heart condition. I thought it will be cured after several hospital visits.
But my doctor looked very concerned when he saw results of the second test. When I asked if her disease was very serious, he said I needed more extensive examination and recommended me to return to Sapporo to give birth to my child in a larger hospital. I went blank and became so anxious and afraid, asking myself why it had happened.
Yuko was diagnosed to have single atrium single ventricle. Simply put, it means she has only 2 rooms in her heart by nature while people usually have 4 rooms each. She needed to undergo 3 operations to cure her disease.
She had her 1st operation on March 11, 10 days after her birth, on the very day of the Great Tohoku Earthquake. We didn't experience as powerful shaking in Sapporo as those in Tohoku and the operation was over before the earthquake. The second operation is scheduled 6 months after her birth and the third operation after her 1st birthday, so it seems to still take a long time for her to recover from her illness.
As I live in Sapporo City so it takes only about 50 minutes to arrive at the hospital by car. Yet I am currently staying in the Sapporo House since I gave birth with a c-section. My mother also stayed with me in the House immediately after the delivery, but no now I am staying there alone to take care of Yuko.
My husband often visits the House and comes with a lot of foodstuffs on weekends so we cook our meals together in the House's kitchen. I think he is also having hard time as he has to take care of himself at home and go to work. But he understands the current situation well.
I didn't know about the House at all. I knew when I returned to Sapporo that my daughter should go to Kodomokkuru (Hokkaido Medical Center for Child Health and Rehabilitation) for her operation, so I searched various information on the Internet and found about the House. I applied for accommodations in the House on the day on which Yuko was transferred to the hospital.
I was surprised to see its quite neat and clean facilities. It has all equipment and facilities we need and is located near the hospital. I really feel at home in the House and it greatly helps us save money. So I want as many people as possible to know abut the House!
Yuko is so small but trying hard to recover from the illness.
She will become 2 months old soon but has not been home yet as she has been suffering a complication after the operation. Yet I was pleased to give her a bath recently. Now I find happiness in such little things and learn many things from Yuko.?
I hope I can return home with Yuko this May. I will take it easy and keep watching over Yuko receiving medical treatment.
