Family Stories

The House brought a smile to my daughter and made her say “I feel safe with you, mother. It’s fun to stay here!”

November 19, 2010 Marin Tanioka

Mrs. Tanioka has been staying at the Kochi House for four months.
She was originally planning for a short stay, but has been making repeated House stays since her daughter Marin’s hospital stay was extended. Every day, Mrs. Tanioka leaves for her daughter’s hospital room early in the morning and returns to the House late at night, and spends most of her time with Marin in the hospital. On the weekends, Mrs. Tanioka’s husband and other children came to the House to spend time together, such as by receiving affection from their often absent mother and eating homemade meals. Occasionally, Marin receives permission from the hospital to stay out overnight, making the House a special place where the Tanioka family can spend valuable time together.
One day, as the date of Marin’s much-awaited hospital discharge neared, a message arrived from Marin.
“I was first told that I would be in the hospital for 10 days. After my surgery, I was told that my hospital stay would be for four months. When I heard that, I was very unhappy and cried.
But the Ronald McDonald House made everything much easier.
Thanks to the Ronald McDonald House. My mother can always stay with me at the hospital from early in the morning to late at night. It would be very hard for mom if she had to go home every night, and so I am glad that there was a place to stay nearby where she can spend the night.
The Ronald McDonald House gave me Christmas and New Year presents.
That made me very happy.
When I got a permission to stay out overnight, I stayed the Ronald McDonald House. It was fun and there were many videos which I can see.
Mom was happy to see the kitchen and bedroom clean.
I don’t want to get sick again, but I do want to stay at the House again after I leave the hospital.
Thank you, Ronald McDonald House. I’ll do my best even after I leave the hospital!”
